Ridgeway Color Standards and Nomenclature
By Robert Ridgeway, 1912, 43p, with 53 color plates (1,115 named colors), HB.
Robert Ridgeway was an ornithologist and he produced this work for
identifying the colors of birds. In the 1930’s Dr. Clarence Brazer adopted
Ridgeway’s work for identifying the color of U.S. essays. Since that time
this book has been much sought after by philatelists.
It is the best reference work on color other than the modern day Munsell
color system. Each page contains 27 color chips printed in flat ink. Each
page is interleaved with tissue paper to protect the chips. The edition was
limited to 500 copies and most went to libraries. There are very few copies
remaining today that are of exceptional quality.
